communal platter chair guide
plastic from vegetable crates, found Bendt Winge ‘R-48’ chair
2020
After its creation by Norwegian Bendt Winge in 1970 the ‘R-48’ plastic chair multiplied. Total population five million individuals. They quickly colonized hallways and waiting rooms of public institutions, mainly in the Nordic countries. The chairs became ubiquitous, endemic creatures in the wilderness of Municipal Office.
One of them was left alone, expelled from the group. It was sitting in sun & rain for unrecorded number of years at a courtyard of Skåne University hospital in Malmö. This Norwegian produce fell ill. Sunlight chewed into its surface: it was flaking off, dead skin peeling. Radiation gradually degraded top layers of the chair.
Just when the glory of this elderly mass-produced plastic champion had faded new fruit baskets and cornucopian platters of food logistics rushed in, mending the sick thing. An altruistic act of kindness, as they all belonged to the same family of polypropylene.
